NRI Celebrates 35 Years of Staffing Excellence Where were you on June 1, 1967? Some of us weren’t even born yet, some were in elementary school or high school thinking about the future and for still others of us...well, we won’t get into that right now! For NRI it was just the beginning.
“The NRI Group” was established in Chevy Chase, Maryland as a contingency search firm, or as they were called in those days an “employment agency”, focusing solely on permanent placement for office support positions. Within the first ten years we added legal and accounting to our specialties and offices in Washington, DC and Virginia.
In 1981, we decided to try a little “experiment” out of a small office and added temporary help services to our repertoire. The Temporary Resources Group began as a separate company from The NRI Group and quickly grew, opening it’s own branch offices throughout the metropolitan area.
Permanent and temporary Healthcare staffing was added in the 1990s.
The NRI Group and The Temporary Resources Group continued to grow and reshape, working in partnership with each other until June 1, 1996, when both were reborn as one, becoming the NRI Staffing Resources of today.
To better serve our clients, candidates and temporaries, we decided that the best way to do so was to merge the two companies together and to offer all services under one roof. All NRI offices and internal positions were reshaped to accommodate this new concept; a fully diversified staffing service. Our clients could work with one Marketing Representative/Account Manager team to fill all of their permanent, temporary and temp-to-hire positions withina specialty area and our candidates and temporaries could work with one Recruiter to help them find open positions in all of our offices. This new arrangement even made it easier for permanent placement candidates to temp while on their job search. It also made it easier for our temporary employees to find a permanent position with one of our clients, should they wish it.
Facilitating this new concept in staffing services was NRI’s commitment to technology (see side-bar). NRI’s use of Caldwell-Spartan software has allowed all offices to exchange information about clients, open positions, candidates and temporary employees at all times. In use since 1986 on the temporary side of the business, The NRI Group began to put it in use for permanent placement in 1994. When the two companies merged in 1996, we began to use Caldwell to it’s fullest potential for all positions and for all candidates and temporaries. You probably used it yourself when you registered with NRI!
Since then, NRI has added new forms of technology, switching from dumb terminals to personal computers on every NRI desk to accommodate the advanced versions of Caldwell-Spartan, adding and expanding computer-based software testing and training and adding NRI Technology Solutions as a specialty to our NRI menu of services.
Over our thirty-five year history, we have striven to be the best. All that we do in the way of technology or additional services has been with the aim of better servicing our clients, candidates and employees, both permanent and temporary. We can only guess where the next thirty-five years will take us, but we can be certain that we will only get better!

Technology Timeline
NRI prides itself on staying on the cutting edge of technology. As soon as technology became available to the staffing service industry, NRI took full advantage. But for NRI, technology is like potato chips; once we start, we cannot stop. Moving ahead and getting better as we go on is part of our philosophy. Here is a list of what we have done to enhance our service through the use of technology:1986: Caldwell-Spartan is put into use with dedicated “dumb” terminals to assist in the placement of temporary positions as well as payroll and billing.
1990: QWIZ software is introduced as an automated testing and training tool for temporaries.
1993: QWIZ is updated and expanded to include permanent candidates.
1994: Caldwell-Spartan is expanded to include permanent positions.
1997: NRI launches website providing access to online job postings.
1999: Switch from “dumb” terminals to personal computers on all associates’ desks to accommodate updated Caldwell-Spartan software that allows us to interfaces with Microsoft Office.
2001: Redesign of website to make it more interactive and user-friendly.
2002: Introduction of electronic timesheets and online testing software.
The Secret of Success
Over our thirty-five year history we have redesigned our logo a few times, tweaked our name, reshaped, reformed and refined. One of the things that has never changed is a key part of our success YOU! So the secret of success is really no secret at all; everyone knows we have a pool of the best candidates and temporaries in the metropolitan Washington-Baltimore area.By way of thanking you for your loyalty and dedication, NRI is increasing the bonus to $35 for any referral of a temporary who works eighty hours or any candidate hired to a permanent position. We celebrate thirty-five years of staffing success, in part, because of you. Thank you!
