Find a New Job in 2016

If you have been looking for a job for an extended period of time, the process can be discouraging. But now that the New Year is in full swing, it is a great time to reset your job search and try a new angle or idea to kick start your career in the right direction. If you want to find a job in 2016, here are some things you can try today to re-energize your search and yourself.

Reset your goals.

Have you lost focus on what it was you were looking for in the first place? Maybe it is time to reevaluate your goals. Are you looking for jobs that suit your long-term vision? Do they fit your personality? Would you be happy doing them? If you take a different approach, it might be the only push you need for not just finding a job this year, but finding the right job.

Create a plan.

One you have goals, you need a plan to execute. What steps can you take to find the job you want? Do you want to apply to 10 new jobs each month? Perhaps you need to go back to school or take some additional certifications. Maybe you need to step up your networking and want to attend one event each month. Create your plan and track the results. Don’t change your plan if it doesn’t work the first time. After a few weeks or months, take an analysis and learn which methods are successful and which ones need modifications.

Be consistent.

A plan won’t work if you’re not dedicated to the change. If you say you want to network more but you don’t attend the events, you’re not going to meet the people who could help you. They often say that looking for a job is a full-time job, so treat it that way with measurable tasks and assignments. This step builds off your created plan. It’s very easy to get discouraged after one or two failures. Hard work will pay off in the long run.

Stay positive.

Finally, attitude has as much to do with your job search success as anything else. While it can be easy to feel negative about not being employed, don’t let these feelings seep into your communications with others. Instead, make sure that you stay positive and don’t act desperate. You want to prove why they should hire you, not tell them about your challenges.
