5 Tips for Unemployed Law Grads

Congratulations, you’ve graduated from Law School. Law programs are hard and they require a lot of fortitude to complete, so you’ve already proven that you’re capable of anything. But, the legal profession has always been difficult to break into, and its become even more difficult with the added COVID-19 crisis. But there are some things you can do to find your first law job even if you’re struggling.

Leverage Your Network

Regardless of the job climate, the network you’ve built while in law school is always going to play a big role in your future career. Think about your summer job programs, your professors, and organizations you were a part of. Reach out to alumni groups in your community. Now is the perfect time to forge connections with your expanded legal network.

Use Resources from Your Law School

Your law school has a vested interest in seeing you succeed. Don’t be afraid of reaching out to the career services department to see how they can help. They may be able to make additional connections you hadn’t thought of or work with you to improve your resume or other job search materials to give you a much better chance and landing your first law job.

Be Flexible

It’s also important to note that your first job out of law school may not be your perfect or ideal job. These entry-level jobs may not pay as much as you would love to make. That’s okay. Use this time to build your skills, learn how to practice law, and add experience to your resume. The more flexible you are about the kind of job you’re willing to take out of law school the better your chances of finding a good first fit.

Apply with a Staffing Service

It’s also a good idea to apply with a staffing agency specializing in legal placements. These companies have expanded networks and receive opportunities for jobs in every practice area. They can work with you to find a great placement where you can gain experience. These can be short-term or long-term assignments and you may even find an employer that’s a perfect fit.
