If you’re considering your career in the healthcare field, you may have thought about a role as a medical assistant. It is one of the hottest career choices for healthcare today, so its no wonder that many people are looking at the steps they need to take to become a medical assistant. Before you do, there are some things you should know. Here is our three-step guide to becoming a medical assistant.

What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants generally work alongside doctors to provide patient care in clinic or doctor’s office settings. While the specific job duties will vary from workplace to workplace, there are some things a medical assistant is generally responsible for day-to-day. They include a variety of both administrative and clinical tasks.

They may also work in the capacity of a patient liaison to the doctors by having the first point of contact with the patient and recording any pertinent information.

Step 1: Training

Medical assistants can get training typically one of two ways: on the job training or formal training. On-the-job training requires you to have a high school diploma or GED and find a doctor willing to train you as an apprentice. While this path was once very popular, more doctors prefer individuals with formal training.

Medical assistant training programs are available at many universities, community college, or technical schools. If you like in-person instruction, you may choose to go to an on-campus program. Or, if you need more flexibility in your schedule, you can get the training with an online degree.

Step 2: Certification

Certification isn’t necessarily a requirement for becoming a medical assistant, but many employers prefer to hire someone certified. To get a certification, you need to take the Certified Medical Assistant exam.

To take the CMA exam, you must have completed training through an accredited school and pay the fee, which will vary in price depending on your affiliations. It helps to prepare for the exam or take practice exams ahead of time.

Step 3: Finding a Job

Once you’ve completed training and have your CMA, you will be able to find a medical assistant position in the greater Washington DC area.

The best way to do that is to apply with an agency that specializes in healthcare placements around the area. They have a built-in network and can help you leverage your background, resume, and experience to find the best opportunity.
