Career Spotlight: CNA

Have you thought about a career as a certified nursing assistant? There are a lot of questions about the requirements and the certifications necessary to find an opportunity. There are many reasons to consider a career as a CNA, but it’s helpful to know where to start. Before starting the process, consider what you need to do to become a CNA and create a plan to make it happen.

High School or GED

Before you can become a CNA, you’ll need to make sure you have the basic education to get started. CNA programs require a high school diploma or GED to qualify. Once that prerequisite is achieved, there are only a few additional steps before getting certified.

Nursing Assistant Training

Step two is to begin nursing assistant training. Talk to your local trade school, community college, or medical facilities to learn more about the programs available in your area. You also want to ensure the program you’re interested in is approved by the state nursing board and the National League for Nursing Accredited Commission.

State Requirements

The requirements for CNA certifications are different between states, so confirm with your program and location. Once you’ve determined the program chosen is compliant with those requirements, you begin the next steps. To do this, check with your state’s nursing board before enrolling in any classes.

CNA Certification Exam

The last step to becoming a CAN is taking the CNA certification exam. There are two parts to the exam, written and practical. The written exam is offered at a testing center where you will take it with a group of other prospective CNA candidates. It includes a variety of multiple-choice questions that you’ll need to answer within 90 minutes. The clinical skills exam is given individually, and you’ll be tested on four randomly selected skills and given 30 minutes to complete them.
