4 Problems Nurses Face Today

The medical industry is in flux as we speak. Several things are happening in the market, impacting nurses. Whether you’re working or looking for a job, what are some of the problems that nurses face today? It helps to know what they are so you can be prepared if you ever find yourself in the position to deal with them. Here are four problems you should consider.

Staffing Shortages

While staffing shortages can mean there are more jobs for qualified nurses, it does present an immediate problem from nurses already working. Staff shortages mean longer hours for currently working nurses. While staffing is an employer issue, it affects a nurse’s ability to do their job when they’re pulled into many directions when staff is short.

Workplace Dangers

Safety in the workplace is also critical for nurses. Some common issues include improper lifting techniques causing back strain and the use of sharp equipment, such as needles. On the job, you always need to be diligent about workplace safety, even if the hospital or clinic doesn’t have a culture of safety in place.

Wage Compensation

Because nursing is in high demand, we often think that wages will be competitive. But that’s not always the case. Before accepting a position, always be sure to do your homework for the pay in the location and specialization. The only way to be in a position of power in a salary negotiation is to have as much data to back up your request as possible.

Education Gap

Another situation that’s affecting the nursing profession is the education gap. As clinics and hospitals are seeing older nurses retire, they’re finding that many of the incoming employees don’t have the same level of knowledge and expertise. Of course, a lot of that insight comes from experience, but there are things you can do to improve your situation. One overlooked option is to find a mentor. A more experienced nurse who may be heading to retirement may be able to share their experience with you.
